Who Is a Candidate for a Facelift Lift?

Contrary to popular belief, women aren’t the only ones who seek out a more long-lasting solution, such as a facelift. These procedures are perfect for men, too, which means anyone in good health with realistic goals can be a strong candidate. The goal is always to use cutting-edge techniques to achieve natural-looking results, and that means a younger, refreshed you who is also brimming with improved self-esteem and confidence. That said, is every patient who wants a facelift a good candidate? Read on to find out.

Dr. Sanderson’s and Dr. Braswell’s Technique and Philosophy:

There is a fine line to walk when it comes to facelift procedures. What we mean by that is simple: patients want to look more youthful without looking “different.” We all want that. Facelifts often get a bad rap because of past techniques that created a look that felt overdone, fake, or unnaturally pulled. The good news is that those techniques are a thing of the past. No longer are facelifts focused on simple “skin pulling.” Dr. Sanderson and Dr. Braswell’s tried-and-true technique is to tighten and reposition multiple layers of tissue. This allows for a completely natural look that would be unnoticeable to someone you’re meeting for the first time. Our patients who choose a facelift in Fort Worth are consistently happy and have stated that they owe it to meticulous preoperative planning, a personalized approach, and pinpoint execution.

Dr. Sanderson and Dr. Braswell will perform a thorough exam during your initial consultation and spend plenty of time answering any questions you may have. The procedure, which may also be combined with a neck lift, is typically performed under general anesthesia and takes several hours, depending on the extent of correction needed.

Here are a few of the factors that Dr. Sanderson and Dr. Braswell will look at during your consultation:

Overall health

Overall health — We will do a full assessment to ensure you are in good overall health. Conditions such as high blood pressure and high blood sugar will need to be addressed and controlled before moving forward with a facelift surgery.

Realistic goals

Realistic goals — While you may have the best intentions, your goals must also be realistic. Dr. Sanderson and Dr. Braswell spend considerable time talking with patients about their goals and expectations so we can deliver the results they want and need.

Non-smokers

Non-smokers — Smoking is an addiction that can cause myriad health issues, including but not limited to an increased risk of cancer and limiting your body’s ability to fight infections and heal from surgical procedures. You will need to quit smoking one month before your facelift procedure so that you are healthy enough to move forward without unnecessary complications.

Support network

Support network — Having a strong support network that can care for you physically after the procedure and offer emotional support is paramount to a successful surgery day and overall recovery.

How Our Facelift Process Works

Facelift surgeries are advanced cosmetic procedures designed to address signs of aging in the face (and sometimes the neck), tighten sagging skin, smooth deep folds, and reduce the appearance of jowls and other common signs of aging for a rejuvenated look. A facelift, or rhytidectomy, targets the lower two-thirds of the face, addressing sagging skin and deep nasolabial folds. If necessary, a neck lift, or platysmaplasty, can be included on surgery day to remove excess skin and tighten muscles in the neck. When used together, these procedures provide a comprehensive solution to restore a youthful, refreshed appearance.

Dr. Sanderson and Dr. Braswell emphasize natural-looking outcomes. Understanding these intricacies is critical to avoiding an overdone or fake appearance.

Every facelift starts with an initial consultation to discuss what you want to achieve through surgery. Dr. Sanderson and Dr. Braswell will conduct a thorough examination, make recommendations, and answer any questions you may have. They may also recommend other facial procedures, including neck lift, eyelid surgery, brow lift, or even fat grafting.

On the day of the surgery:

  • Please arrive at our surgical center for pre-surgery prep.
  • You will receive light anesthesia. The procedure is typically performed under general anesthesia and takes several hours, depending on the extent of correction needed.
  • Depending on your discussed goals and needs, Dr. Sanderson and Dr. Braswell will reposition and tighten targeted areas of your facial tissue and remove sagging facial skin.
  • You will go home the same day as your procedure.

Incisions are made in inconspicuous areas, such as the hairline and around the ears, to minimize visible scarring. The underlying muscles and tissues are lifted and tightened, excess skin is removed, and the incisions are closed with sutures.

Have You Heard About Deep Plane Facelift?

An advanced technique, a deep plane facelift releases key facial ligaments and lifts deeper structural tissues simultaneously to help you achieve more youthful contours and address skin laxity, wrinkles, and deep folds in a single comprehensive procedure.

Recovery After Facelift Surgery in Fort Worth

You will be given a dressing that is wrapped around your head and other surgical areas. You can also expect to have a surgical drain placed to promote healing. The next day, you will return to our facility to have these dressings and the drain removed to check progress. Our goal isn’t just to perform the procedure. We are here to support your recovery and continue offering guidance.

Most patients can return to normal activities within two weeks, but strenuous activities should be avoided for several weeks. Full results become more apparent as swelling subsides, revealing a smoother, more youthful facial appearance.

How To Properly Care for Scars After a Facelift

As stated earlier, incisions are made in inconspicuous areas to minimize visible scarring. Any remaining scarring can be treated by:

  • Following all post-op instructions: We address all facets of a facelift before and after the procedure, including what to expect and the steps you need to take during recovery to ensure the results you want. Included in your list of instructions will be a scar care routine to limit the visibility of additional scarring. You should follow these to the letter.
  • Avoid sunlight: Fort Worth patients should avoid harmful sunlight as much as possible by staying indoors. If you must go outside, wear a hat and sunscreen at all times.
  • Stop smoking: This habit is one of the best ways to inhibit your body’s ability to heal. So stop.
  • Creams and lotions: You will need to get permission from Dr. Sanderson and Dr. Braswell before applying any face creams or lotions post-surgery. Some of these products can be beneficial; others can create more harm than good.
  • Focus on massaging your scars: Gently massaging your scars encourages blood flow and softens new scar tissue. Speak with Dr. Sanderson and Dr. Braswell to ensure you are applying the right massage techniques.

Other Factors That Influence Scarring

Unfortunately, several factors influence scarring that may or may not be controllable.

  • Age — Skin becomes thinner and less elastic as we age.
  • Genetics — Some people are more prone to scarring than others.
  • Skin color — Darker skin has a greater risk of forming thicker and more noticeable scars.

Why Work With Dr. Sanderson and Dr. Braswell

Patients rave about Dr. Sanderson and Dr. Braswell’s bedside manner. They are kind, caring, compassionate, and 100% transparent about their processes and what will make the most sense for your plastic surgery needs. On top of that, they represent the best of the best in the industry. Dr. Sanderson completed his surgical internship at the University of Tennessee in Memphis and completed his otolaryngology-head and neck surgery residency at the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio. He is board-certified in otolaryngology-head and neck surgery, and his intricate understanding of the facial and nasal anatomy, provided by otolaryngology, prepared him well for his plastic surgery training.
Meanwhile, Dr. Braswell completed a residency in general surgery at the Army’s flagship medical center in San Antonio. During his general surgery residency, he decided to specialize in plastic and reconstructive surgery, but the attacks on 9/11 changed the course of his career. He spent the next 10 years as a general surgeon. After the United States pulled out of Iraq, Dr. Braswell entered a 3-year plastic and reconstructive surgical residency in New York. The Army then assigned him to Fort Cavazos, TX, where he created the first plastic and reconstructive surgery service at the world’s largest military installation.
At the end of the day, Dr. Sanderson and Dr. Braswell are committed to helping you live your best life possible. They spend time talking with you, discussing your concerns, and answering your questions, including the risks and rewards of any procedure.
